Sociologist

Dina R. Rose has a PhD in sociology from Duke University.  She has over 15 years experience in teaching and research.  Just as importantly, she is also a mother and a foodie.  Dina became interested in understanding how parents teach their children to eat when her daughter was born in 2001.  Then, four years ago, Dina began researching, systematically observing and interviewing parents on this topic.  Now she is writing a book called It’s NOT About Nutrition: The Art & Science of Teaching Kids to Eat Right.  Dina also teaches parents strategies from the book though workshops and individual coaching.  During a recent sabbatical year spent with her family in South Africa, Dina spoke to parents’ groups, presented her work to social workers and her essays on this topic appeared in local parent-oriented newsletters and websites.

Dina’s social science experience spans the academic and nonprofit sectors and covers a broad spectrum of topics.  Her previous research in criminology has been published in a wide range of academic journals, book chapters, monographs and one book and her work has been featured in The Washington PostThe New York Times and on The Brian Lehrer Show (WNYC).  In It’s NOT About Nutrition: The Art & Science of Teaching Kids to Eat Right, Dina combines her professional expertise on socialization, her knowledge about nutrition, parenting and food psychology research, with the practical skills she has gained from talking to, interviewing and coaching hundreds of parents.
